Privacy Policy for Japa
Effective dateOctober 14, 2026
We do not collect, store or share any of your data.
Japa has no account, no servers and no tracking. Everything you record, including your practices, counts, intentions and journal, stays on your own device. None of it is ever sent to us.
Japa is a companion for mantra practice: a counter, a digital mala, intentions, 108-day journeys, a private journal and gentle reminders. This policy explains how Japa ("we", "us") handles your information when you use the app on iPhone, iPad or Android.
The short version
- We do not store your data. We have no servers and never receive anything from the app, so there is nothing of yours for us to keep.
- There is no account. You never sign up, sign in or give us your name or email.
- Everything stays on your device. Your practices, counts, intentions, journal and settings are stored only on your phone or tablet.
- There is no tracking. Japa contains no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no third-party trackers.
- Sharing is your choice. Data leaves Japa only when you share an image or export a file yourself.
- You can delete everything at any time, from inside the app.
We do not collect or store your data
We do not collect, store, sell or share any personal information. Japa has no servers, so your information has nowhere to go. We cannot see it, access it or recover it.
In particular, Japa never collects:
- your name, email address, phone number or any other contact details
- your location
- your contacts, photos, camera or microphone
- device identifiers or advertising identifiers
- usage statistics, analytics or crash reports
Japa works fully offline. The Android version does not have permission to use the internet. The iOS version contains no code that connects to any server.
What stays on your device
To work, Japa keeps the following in a private database on your device:
- the practices and mantras you use or add
- your counts, sittings and their dates, times and durations
- your intentions (sankalp), goals and 108-day journeys
- your journal entries, including any mood you record
- your routines and reminder times
- your settings and preferences
Other apps cannot read this information, and it is never sent to us or to anyone else.
Permissions Japa asks for
Japa asks only for permissions that serve your practice. You can turn them off at any time in your device settings.
- Notifications. Japa uses notifications for reminders you set yourself. They are scheduled on your device, not sent from a server. A reminder may show the name of your routine, and depending on your device settings it may appear on your lock screen.
- Run at startup (Android). After your phone restarts, Japa puts your reminders back in place.
- Vibration. Japa gives a gentle tap of haptic feedback with each repetition.
- Background audio (iOS). Ambient sounds keep playing while your screen is locked during a sitting.
- View network connections (Android). This permission comes with the audio player that Japa uses. Japa does not use the network, and on Android it has no permission to reach the internet.
Japa also reads your device's time zone so that reminders arrive at the right local time and each count is recorded on the day it happened. Your time zone never leaves your device.
When information leaves your device
Information leaves Japa only in these cases, and each one is something you choose to do.
- Sharing an image. You can make an image of your practice to share. You choose whether it includes the mantra text, and it never includes your journal. You pick the app to share it with, and that app's own privacy policy then applies.
Exporting your data. From Settings → Export & backup you can create:
- a full backup (JSON), which contains everything Japa stores, including your journal
- your practice history (CSV)
- your journal (CSV)
You choose where each file goes. These files are not encrypted, so keep them somewhere you trust.
- Your device's own backups. If you have turned on iCloud Backup or Google backup for your device, the operating system may include Japa's data in those backups. Apple or Google provide these backups under their own privacy policies, and we never have access to them. You can manage them in your device settings.
Restoring a backup
From Settings → Restore a backup you can choose a Japa backup file. Japa opens only the file you select, and only to read your practice data back onto your device.
Deleting your data
You are always in control of your data.
- Delete everything: go to Settings → Privacy → Delete all data. This permanently erases every practice, sitting, journal entry, routine and setting from your device.
- Uninstall Japa: uninstalling also removes its data from your device.
Neither option removes files you have exported, or copies in your device's own backups. We cannot restore deleted data, because we never had a copy of it.
Children
Japa is suitable for practitioners of any age. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
Your rights
Privacy laws in many places, including India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act and the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, give you rights over your personal data. These include the right to access, correct or delete it.
All of your Japa data is on your own device, so you can use these rights directly in the app:
- view or edit your data in the app
- export it from Settings → Export & backup
- delete it from Settings → Privacy
We do not store any personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to hand over or erase.
Changes to this policy
If Japa ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this policy and its effective date before the change takes effect. Any optional feature that would send information off your device would be off unless you turn it on, and would be explained clearly in the app first.
